PSHE (Personal Social & Health Education)

Using data from the Growing up in North Yorkshire survey, our PSHE curriculum is designed to meet the needs of our all of our pupils. PSHE is delivered by form tutors which ensures a safe and secure learning environment where pupils feel confident to communicate with staff and peers.

Our curriculum aims to support our student’s holistic development by providing skills to develop confidence, resilience and self-esteem. The school ethos, Love of God, Love of Neighbour is central to the PSHE curriculum. We provide our students with opportunities to recognise themselves as valued individuals, to understand why difference is important and have empathy for others. We aim to equip our students with the essential skills for future employability and to better manage their lives.

The curriculum is split into 3 strands:

  • Health and Relationships and Sex Education
  • Life Skills
  • Citizenship

PSHE is also delivered in lessons, through themes of the week, assemblies and curriculum drop down periods.

Curriculum team

PSHE is taught by form tutors on a rolling timetable every 2 weeks.

Key stage 3 & 4 topics

In each year, students are taught age appropriate material on the topics of:

  1. Health and Relationships and Sex Education
  2. Careers and the World of Work (Lifeskills)
  3. Citizenship

Wider curriculum

PSHE is linked with many other subjects within schools. Where appropriate, staff make links within their subject to PSHE. For example, teacher may focus on what careers a study of their subject could lead to. Students learn about Relationships and Sex Education in both Religious Education and Science. Student study Citizenship within the Humanities subjects.
